Great News for Coyote Valley
You Can Help with the Next Steps

What’s happening
Coyote Valley land developers have withdrawn their proposal to develop three thousand acres of working farmland and vital wildlife habitat in Coyote Valley. In a surprise move, developers who had sought to build on farmlands in San Jose’s Coyote Valley pulled the plug on their plan, as their environmentally-destructive proposal became mired in planning delays and unrealistic economic analyses.

We thank CGF members for supporting our work to stop this project, and for your help in responding to past Action Alerts on Coyote Valley. You have made a difference! And now, there’s more work to do.

Why this is important
The Committee for Green Foothills has worked for decades to fight this proposal and the many proposals that preceded it, dating back to the 1970s. We’re very glad that our work, along with the vital work of other groups like the Sierra Club, Greenbelt Alliance, and the Audubon Society, has helped to reach this point. We call on San Jose to take new steps to protect this vital area. The Mayor has said there should be stronger ‘triggers’ in the General Plan to prevent developing Coyote Valley until it’s really necessary. Other City Council members have called for prioritizing development in downtown and North San Jose before development comes to Coyote Valley. The outmoded plan for an as-yet unbuilt “Coyote Valley Research Park” will soon have its permits expire, and the permits shouldn’t be renewed.

What you can do
Write a letter to San Jose City Councilmembers asking them to support stronger triggers in the General Plan to prevent developing Coyote Valley, and to oppose permit extensions for the environmentally-destructive “Research Park” in Coyote Valley.
