In her book, California in Solitude and Silence, she wrote: I purposely omit all signs of civilization in my painting. This is not a one-woman crusade to obliterate the inexorable encroachment of man. It is just that the quiet untouched lands are what appeal to me and what I want to capture and share. I hope it will make people aware of how fast these spaces are disappearing, act as a wakeup call, and make them realize that now is the time to save these lands for future generations. Committee for Green Foothills proudly presents the Jane Gallagher Award in memory of Jane, our former board member, and in recognition of an artist whose work honors the places, people and organizations that inspire the protection of open space. back to top The 2005 Jane Gallagher Award will be presented to photographer Deane Little. I am an avid conservationist, hiker and photographer. I spend as much time as possible hiking the trails of the Bay Area and the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains and trying to capture the incredible beauty of these wild places. I have been a photographer since my college days in Oregon. Besides the continental US, I have photographed and climbed or hiked extensively in Africa, New Zealand, and Hawaii. Last year I had my first experience working in film, producing several nationally aired television commercials featuring families who had lost sons in Iraq. Digital photography is a relatively new medium for me, and I love the power of the technology to capture nature's beauty without waste, chemicals, or delay. I shoot with a Nikon 8800, which I consider the perfect camera for a hiker or backpacker. It is compact but powerful, with a 35 – 350mm zoom lens and a very high-resolution (8 megapixel) sensor that captures the detail of the natural world. I have always had an eye for nature's extraordinary beauty, whether I have a camera with me or not. These days I always carry my camera and tripod when I hike, in the hopes of capturing and sharing the beauty of these places with others. The photographs you see were taken in open space preserves near Skyline, and at the San Mateo coast. I hope my work speaks for itself; the real artistry lies in the natural world itself.
