The Jane Gallagher Award
As a celebrated painter and passionate defender of
open space on the Peninsula, artist Jane Gallagher inspired environmental
protection through her art and actions. In her book, California in
Solitude and Silence, she wrote:

"I purposely omit all signs of civilization in my painting. This
is not a one-woman crusade to obliterate the inexorable encroachment of
man. It is just that the quiet untouched lands are what appeal to me and
what I want to capture and share. I hope it will make people aware of
how fast these spaces are disappearing, act as a wakeup call, and make
them realize that now is the time to save these lands for future generations."

Committee for Green Foothills proudly presents
the Jane Gallagher Award in memory of Jane, our former board member, and
in recognition of an artist whose work honors the places, people and organizations
that inspire the protection of open space.

The 2004 Jane Gallagher
Award will be presented to
Woodside artist Jim
Caldwell.
Jim
Caldwell was born in New York in 1942 and moved to the Bay Area in 1950.
After winning his high school art prize in 1960, he went on to major in
art at Williams College. He spent the year following graduation in the
engraving studio of Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and traveled extensively,
creating watercolors, drawings and paintings. He returned to the United
States for graduate school at Yale University, where he received his Master
of Architecture degree.
Caldwell has had 24 one-man shows and participated in 18 group shows.
He has paintings in more than 250 collections worldwide from Paris to
Japan. He divides his time between painting and a practice in residential
architecture at his studio in Woodside, California.
