CGF Environmental
Forum: The cozy Fog Signal Building at the Point Montara Lighthouse was the setting for Committee for Green Foothills' recent screening of the film "Coastal Clash." Produced by San Francisco's KQED-TV, the hour-long film focuses on land use conflicts on California's Coast - and their ramifications for the state and the nation. Following the screening, attendees were treated to a conversation with the film's Emmy Award-winning producer, Elizabeth Pepin, Coastal Commissioner Sara Wan, and Committee for Green Foothills Legislative Advocate Lennie Roberts. Among them, these three women represent nearly 60 years of experience in environmental activism and coastal protection. The wide-ranging discussion focused on ways individuals could help keep coastal lands accessible, undeveloped and protected. Commissioner Wan encouraged citizens to get involved by attending Coastal Commission hearings (held every month around the state), and by getting to know commissioners. She said that in her nine years as a commissioner, she has found the pro-development lobby to be a vociferous force, one that often leads commissioners away from their mandate of enforcing the state's Coastal Act. Elizabeth shared some of her experiences making the film, including how she made the tough decisions about what to include. Her decisions have proven to be good ones: the film is being praised as balanced and fair. After its statewide premiere, the film has caught on around the nation, and is now being shown on public TV stations throughout the country. KQED is also selling the film on DVD at www.kqed.org/coastalclash. CGF is grateful to the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Peninsula Community Foundation for their support of this and future environmental forums.
