How Coyote Valley hurts central San Jose

Compromise could ruin Coyote Valley development

Converting land to money:
Developers driving the future of Coyote Valley

by Brian Schmidt and Kathy Switky

San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales and others continue to try shoving development of Coyote Valley down our throats, when this development is clearly unnecessary and will cause long-term, irreversible problems for the region.

The City's General Plan has for decades included several minimal conditions designed to ensure that development within the City occurs when and where it makes sense, and in a way that balances jobs and housing. Pro-development forces are suggesting abandoning even these minimal conditions, also called "development triggers," in their rush to pave over Coyote Valley.

For decades, Committee for Green Foothills has opposed the development of Coyote Valley. As planned, Coyote Valley will provide insufficient housing for the business San Jose seeks for the area. Since they seem intent upon developing Coyote Valley, we are also asking the City of San Jose and the Coyote Valley Task Force to follow the city's General Plan. (See our action alert on Coyote Valley.)

In the May 12, 2005 Mercury News, columnist Scott Herhold delves into how local politics are leading the city to pave over farmland when other - better - choices are available. The mistake of developing Coyote Valley, and of letting the housing developers control the process, is irreversible.
