Mel's Lane — a rare sweet treat
by Lennie Roberts

art by Marcus Lui

Seldom does CGF enthusiastically support a new "development" along the San Mateo Coast. Every now and then, however, there is a serendipitous confluence of hard work, great luck, and inspiration that results in appropriate "development."

In August, the California Coastal Commission unanimously denied an appeal by a coastside resident who opposed public access improvements at the little jewel of bluff top next to the Pigeon Point Lighthouse known as Whaler's Cove. Denial of the appeal means that the public access improvements can be built without further delay.

despite the vociferous objections of CGF, fishermen, and educational groups. After fencing off the historic public access to Whaler's Cove Beach, the owner was well into construction when Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) stepped in and bought the property for $2.65 million. We all cheered when POST dismantled the partially-built motel and began restoration of the site.

The final chapter of this saga has now been completed. POST has transferred the property to State Parks, retaining an easement to build trails and other amenities for the public. Walking trails, an information kiosk, a seating area and an overlook deck will be completed this fall.

One segment of the trail will be called Mel's Lane, honoring coastal champion and first Chairman of the Coastal Commission Melvin B. Lane. This is a most fitting and deserved tribute to a true leader for coastal protection.

A truly unique "undevelopment" of the motel and "development" of the trails along the bluffs and down to the beach will enable the public to enjoy panoramic coastal views as well as a little pocket beach and tide pools below.
