A Stanford Trails Update A lot has happened recently in our long effort to move Stanford off of its position of doing so little on constructing the trails it promised six years ago. Last December, Stanford agreed to construct a minimally-acceptable trail near Page Mill Road, but only if Santa Clara County let the university get away with widening a sidewalk along Alpine Road instead of constructing the trail it promised on its own land. CGF warned them this action was illegal, not to mention completely wrong-headed. In June, CGF sued Stanford and Santa Clara County to void the illegal Alpine Road agreement, while expressly doing nothing to stop the Page Mill trail. Stanford decided on its own to then stop working on the Page Mill trail. Our lawsuit will have to pass through procedural hurdles at the lower court and possibly appellate court for quite some time. Meanwhile, Stanford’s decision to stop work on the other trail puts it in non-compliance with its General Use Permit, meaning it should receive no additional permits from the County until it resumes work. The right thing is for Stanford to stop abusing technicalities and remember that a deal is a deal. Additionally, the County should stop rewarding Stanford’s intransigence, treat the university like any other private party, and require it to meet its obligations. These seemingly-simple steps won’t be achieved easily, but CGF will do all it can to make them happen. Published October 2006 in Green Footnotes. Page last updated October 30, 2006. |
