Our Own Megan Medeiros Recognized with Greenbelt Alliance Award

When they hired Megan Medeiros as Executive Director in 2013, our Board of Directors thought that they deserved to get patted on the back.

Well, we all still think that, and now their judgment has been confirmed by Greenbelt Alliance, which is honoring Megan with their 2017 Greenbelt Alliance Champion Award.

“Megan is one of the most dynamic, recognized, energetic, and forceful conservation leaders in the South Bay,” says Greenbelt Alliance CEO Jeremy Madsen about honoring Megan.

“We think so, too” says Committee for Green Foothills Board President Ron Erskine. “Megan’s talents, energy, and passion assure she will be a champion for the Bay Area’s open spaces for decades to come.” Megan’s land-use advocacy began in 2002 as a high-school student working to support a ballot measure to protect hillsides in Fremont. Greenbelt Alliance and Committee for Green Foothills have been working with Megan since around 2009, when she joined the Sierra Club’s Loma Prieta Chapter (whose offices are just up the stairs from our offices). At the Sierra Club she engaged community leaders and members in a host of issues from land conservation to climate change to smart growth and sustainable development. She also started the Community Advocates Leadership Academy, now under Committee for Green Foothills auspices.

“We are proud to present Megan with this award,” says Madsen. “We believe she has the drive and energy to enhance Committee for Green Foothills’ stature as an important Greenbelt Alliance partner.”

“I’m still totally in shock to be getting this recognition,” says Megan. Earth to Megan: You’re the only one in shock.

Greenbelt Alliance is a conservation nonprofit that works to shape the rules that govern growth in the Bay Area in order to protect the region’s open spaces and ensure neighborhoods within our cities and towns are amazing places for everyone. Committee for Green Foothills has worked extensively with Greenbelt Alliance over the years, including on preserving Coyote Valley from the ongoing threats to sprawl over it.
