In April 2017, President Trump signed an executive order requiring the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to review all expansions of marine sanctuaries and monuments that took place after 2007. Two sanctuaries located off the San Mateo coast are potentially affected: the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary expansion and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary expansion. Two more lie within California waters, Cordell Bank and the Channel Islands. All contain sensitive habitat, enhance the lives and livelihoods of people along the coast, offer critical protections for coastal and marine wildlife, and have traditionally enjoyed an unusually high level of bipartisan support. If the expansions are rolled back, these sanctuaries would be vulnerable to highly destructive oil and gas drilling, as well as potentially unsustainable commercial fishing.
Our Goal: We are working to maintain current protections for our Marine Sanctuaries. We will stay involved in resisting the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back these expansions.
