After pressure from Committee for Green Foothills and the Menlo Oaks Tree Advocacy group, in October 2016 San Mateo County Supervisors strengthened the county’s Heritage and Significant Tree Ordinance in response to several incidents of heritage oak trees being damaged or needlessly cut down to make way for large homes in Menlo Oaks neighborhood.
This ordinance strengthens protections for large trees throughout the county, and creates a new position of county arborist who will be advising both County Planning and Parks.
Our Goal: Our Board Member Nancy Reyering and Legislative Advocate Lennie Roberts are members of the County Tree Ordinance Steering Committee that is working with county planning, parks, public works and the office of sustainability to develop a comprehensive approach to improve management of individual trees and the tree canopy in San Mateo County, consistent with the county’s general plan.
