Strategies for Tribal Allyship and Coalitions: Highlighting the Protect Juristac Coalition

The Protect Juristac Coalition is a community of people who are championing the campaign to stop a sand and gravel mine proposal at Juristac. Located in the hillsides southwest of Gilroy, Juristac is the most sacred site of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, who have held ceremonies there for thousands of years. Together with Coyote Valley, this landscape is the only viable path for animals to migrate into and out of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Learn more and sign the petition on their website: protectjuristac.org.

Led by the Amah Mutsun Tribe and Green Foothills, with over twenty members ranging from small community-based organizations and faith based groups, to regional and national nonprofits, the Protect Juristac Coalition has been working together since 2019. From long-time professional advocates to budding student organizers, everyone plays a vital and appreciated role in the campaign.

Come to learn more about this important land use issue as we explore the power of how a broad coalition can effectively build power and advance an advocacy issue. Executive Director Megan Fluke along with the rest of the panel will offer strategies on how to:

  • Act in solidarity with tribes
  • Create a shared leadership model
  • Develop meeting agendas for coalitions
  • Ensure everyone has a role and feels a sense of belonging
  • Foster and keep up momentum over time
