Two Publishing Icons to be Honored
David Loeb and Malcolm Margolin will be honored by Committee for Green Foothills
at Nature’s Inspiration gala in Woodside
Palo Alto, CA: On October 4 at Filoli Estate in Woodside, Committee for Green Foothills will hold its annual Nature’s Inspiration gala. The local nonprofit will celebrate two people who have dedicated much of their lives to inspiring people to explore and cherish local nature, Malcolm Margolin and David Loeb. Together Malcolm and David founded Bay Nature magazine in 2001. Since, David has served as editor and then publisher of Bay Nature magazine and Executive Director of the nonprofit Bay Nature Institute. Malcolm is the founder of the nonprofit publisher and cultural institution Heyday Books and is the author of eight books, including The Ohlone Way: Indian Life in the San Francisco-Monterey Bay Area.
“We are looking forward to celebrating the accomplishments of these two California publishing icons. Malcolm and David have helped people understand and love our landscape and our place in it,” says Megan Medeiros, Committee for Green Foothills’ executive director.
Committee for Green Foothills, an advocacy organization working to protect open space, recognizes the importance of community involvement in the protection of our region’s natural resources.
Bay Nature magazine and Heyday Books work to inform and inspire all of us to better know and love our region’s wild places. But, says David, “If it wasn’t for the advocacy of groups like Committee for Green Foothills, there wouldn’t be anything for Bay Nature to write about.” Each piece is a critical element in safeguarding our open space and the health of the Bay Area.
In addition to our shared passion for local nature, Malcolm, David, and Committee for Green Foothills keenly understand the need to broaden our reach to include every segment of our diverse community. Latino Outdoors is an organization that connects and supports Latino leadership in the conservation community. José González, the founder of Latino Outdoors, was featured in a 2014 Bay Nature interview series where he said, “We want to build on the conservation successes of the past. If we have all this beautiful, protected open space in the Bay Area, how can we engage the demographics of now and the future so they care?” For this reason, Committee for Green Foothills will be making a gift to Latino Outdoors in honor of Malcolm and David’s environmental legacy.
About Committee for Green Foothills: Committee for Green Foothills is a 53-year-old nonprofit organization based in Palo Alto. We work to protect the open spaces, farmlands, and natural resources of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties through advocacy, education, and grassroots action. Honorees of our annual Nature’s Inspiration gala have included US Congressman Pete McCloskey (2010), former Coastal Commission chief Peter Douglas (2011), and Congresswomen Anna Eshoo and Jackie Speier (2014).
