Strategic Plan 2025-2030

Protecting Nature and Farmland in a Changing World

Published: May 2025

For over 60 years, Green Foothills has protected local nature and farmland, ensuring future generations can enjoy wild places close to home. Thanks to the power of grassroots action and our advocacy for smart policies, we’ve helped protect over 200,000 acres across San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Benito Counties. But there’s more work to do.

As we look toward 2030, the Bay Area faces big environmental challenges. But we’re not backing down. We’ve got a bold new Five-Year Strategic Plan to tackle these issues head-on, working to protect wildlife, vital habitats, farmland, our coasts, and places sacred to Indigenous communities.

It’s all about taking action through four pillars that guide everything we do.

  • Pillar #1: Lead the way on smart land use and policy. We’re stepping up our advocacy to keep local nature and farmland front and center. Whether it’s influencing decisions at the state and regional level, supporting cities and counties with sustainable strategies, or rallying public conversations around conservation, we’re all in.
  • Pillar #2: Cultivate a new wave of environmental leaders. Through our Leadership Program, we’re building a diverse network of changemakers ready to take on the challenges ahead. With up-to-date curriculum, mentorship, and connections to conservation and environmental justice leaders, we’re working to make sure everyone gets a seat at the table.
  • Pillar #3: Build strong partnerships. Change happens when we work together. That’s why we’re strengthening our partnerships with Indigenous tribes, grassroots groups, and nonprofits to align our efforts and amplify voices that need to be heard.
  • Pillar #4: Keep Green Foothills strong and resilient. We’re investing in our staff and volunteers, giving them the tools they need to succeed. We’re also continuing to diversify our team and board, making sure we’re as strong and resilient as the ecosystems we protect.
