Green Foothills Remembers: Mary Moffat and Sue LaTourrette

Mary Moffat and Sue LaTourrette

Green Foothills was saddened to learn of the recent passing of former board members Mary Moffat (1927-2025) and Sue LaTourrette (1936-2025).

Mary was a founding member of Green Foothills and our first Executive Director, starting in 1962 when we were an all-volunteer organization. In addition to being a long-time Green Foothills supporter, she later worked several years for The Nature Conservancy’s Northern California Chapter, editing the chapter newsletter and organizing field trips for TNC members to visit local nature preserves. In retirement, she turned her attention increasingly to managing her family’s historic farm in Southwest Wisconsin, ultimately moving back to live in Wisconsin full-time. She formed partnerships with the Wisconsin Historical Society and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, culminating in the designation of the farm, known as Tippesaukee, as a national historic site.

Sue was a stalwart supporter of Green Foothills for decades. She and her husband, Pete, served on the board together from 2002-2007 and volunteered for Green Foothills in a variety of roles over the years. She frequently participated in Green Foothills events, including the annual Nature’s Inspiration celebration, which she and Pete also helped plan for many years. She was also an active participant in several other local community organizations, including Environmental Volunteers, Los Altos Mountain View Community Foundation, and Peninsula Open Space Trust. She loved nature and the outdoors, and enjoyed many years of hiking with a devoted group of friends that dubbed themselves the Walkie Talkies.
