This workshop is hosted by Nuestra Casa in partnership with Green Foothills, the Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter, SPUR, Citizens Committee to Complete the Refuge, and Sequoia Audubon Society.
What’s Happening
The Ravenswood Business District/4 Corners Specific Plan is the city’s proposed plan for growth in the northeastern part of the city (see map below). The plan envisions up to 3.35 million square feet of office space and up to 1,600 units of housing. Office buildings next to the Bay wetlands could be up to eight stories, and buildings closer to existing neighborhoods could be four or five stories. That much development could cause impacts such as increased traffic, gentrification and displacement, and harm to wetlands and sensitive species.
Community benefits that might be provided due to the Ravenswood Specific Plan include new parks, affordable housing, job training, and support for local businesses. But these benefits come with trade-offs. For example, providing new parks sounds great, but with thousands of new office workers and new residents in the area as a result of this development, will the amount of parkland be sufficient to accommodate all the people who will want to use it?
The city is asking community members to submit comments through this public comment form. The deadline to submit comments is July 25.
Why It Matters
The amount of new development proposed in the Ravenswood Specific Plan is bigger than anything East Palo Alto has seen before. Whether you believe this massive development is a good thing for the city or not, it will fundamentally change East Palo Alto. That’s why it’s so important for community members to learn about the Ravenswood Specific Plan and tell city officials their opinions.
